Spain Overtakes China In Coronavirus Deaths

Spain is now the latest country to overtake China in coronavirus deaths, becoming the world’s second hardest-hit country with a total of 3,445 deaths and more than 400 new deaths on a daily basis.

The country is currently on a nationwide lockdown as top health official Fernando Simon predicts the nation is yet to reach the peak of its outbreak as the number of cases will continue to rise in the coming days. Health Minister Salvador Illa said the government has agreed to buy €432 million euros’ worth of masks, tests, gloves, and respirators from China, which will start arriving in weekly shipments from the end of this week.

Spain first went into lockdown on March 13th. The period was initially expected to last 15 days, but Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says the state of emergency could be extended for an additional 14 days. Earlier this week, officials resorted to turning a Madrid ice rink into a morgue as its deaths piled up. The country’s emergency military unit has been called in to transport bodies and troops have disinfected about 500 of the nation’s senior care homes.

Hospitalization Linked To Heart Injury

According to a new study, injury to the heart may be a common condition among people hospitalized with Covid-19. It’s also linked to a greater risk of death for those patients.

The study found that among a group of 416 adult COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Wuhan, 19.7% of patients had a cardiac injury. 51.2% of the patients with a cardiac injury died as opposed to just 4.5% of those without cardiac injury. Cardiac injury occurs when there is damage to heart muscle, which can occur when blood flow is low, causing a heart attack.

The study did not indicate whether COVID-19 directly causes cardiac injury, however, a Professor of Public Health at Syracuse University in New York, says many patients who pull through may still have cardiac injury and associated long-term cardiovascular issues as a consequence of COVID-19 infection.

Jordan Eases Complete Lockdown

Jordan has eased one of the world’s strictest lockdowns over the coronavirus after it prompted chaotic scenes in the country. Just days after a complete curfew went into effect, people protested to receive bread distributions from government trucks, the emergency hotline went offline, and some reported they had nothing at home to eat.

The government has since loosened restrictions on movement, allowing people to leave their homes on foot for essential trips, such as purchasing food and obtaining medicine. A curfew is still in place in the country from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m.
